For
over 2 years, Vatican Lokey worked as an Assistant Editor, layout
artist, and webmaster for the New Orleans publication Vive la Vie!
Magazine. Below are just a few of the articles, cover artworks,
and columns he either wrote, created, or assisted in creating during
his tenure with the magazine.
During
his tenure as Assistant Editor of the magazine, Vatican had the great
pleasure of working with the late J.J. DeWitt, a veteran newsman from
Chicago who created "The Column", a monthly comic strip/scathing gossip
column which struck at the very bones of New Orleans celebrities and
ne'er-do-well's. While the words and ideas expressed were soley
J.J.'s, the character of "Dolores" was a pseudonym for Vatican, who did
the majority of the legwork for the aging newsman. The columns
below include his first work for the magazine, and a selection of the
more corrosive chapters, with explanations from the notes of Mr.
DeWitt. Due to the libelous materials contained within, some
details have been expurgated or altered for the sake of avoiding
unnecessary litigation. But, to those who read carefully, they
will know just whom is to be referred to in these works.
Vatican
also had the great fortune to write (or co-author) a series of articles
on the history of New Orleans, including the articles linked
below. The first article, "The State of New Orleans Theatre"
proved to be one of the most controversial articles in the magazine's
history.
